Somali FA to organize regional level leagues

With Somalia currently emerging from decades of lawlessness and civilwars, the country's football Federation was on the process of the organization of regional level leagues, as the first team from the semiautonomous Somali state of Puntland arrived in the capital Mogadishu on Friday as part of the preparations for the country's regional leagues.


The 22 member COSMED football team delegation lead by its chairman Abdi Qani Khalif Arabey was received at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International airport by Somali Football Federation authorities, before they were escorted to the Global hotel which was booked for them several weeks ago.

The team’s arrival in the capital was part of the ongoing preparations for the launch of regional level football leagues which are expected in the country by the end of the year or sometime next year, according to Somali Football Federation Secretary General Abdi Qani Said Arab.



The COSMED football team representing the City of Galkayo in the Somali state of Puntland will have friendly matches with two Division A clubs. They are the defending champions Elman FC and Dekedda.

"The security situation in the country is somehow becoming better in comparison with the past years and taking advantage from such atmosphere were are planning to arrange inter regional football leagues across the country—not to be confused with the regional tourney for friendship and development” Somali Football federation Secretary General Abdi Qani Said Arab said in a press statement later on the day.

He said that every district in the country will have its own league, while the teams who top the district level competitions will promote to the regional level and then those who top the regional level leagues will promote to the national league.

"The arrival of COMSED football team in the capital marks the start of the arrivals of more other teams from the 18 regions in the country, the team’s arrival also carries three main objectives” the secretary General noted in his Friday’s press statement.

He said the objectives include:

·To encourage youth integration and football promotion in entire regions in the country.

·To pave the way for the near future regional level football leagues.

·To hunt national future national team members from such competitions.

The statement praised the founder of the COMSED football team Dr. Abdulkader Mahmoud Jama popularly known as ‘Dr. Dhaga Adde’ who has been playing a key role in the football promotion in the country and had helped many youngsters become football professionals.


"On the behalf of Somali Football Federation, I take this opportunity to thank Dr. Dhaga Adde for his commitment to the development of football in Somalia” SFF secretary General Abdi Qani Said Arab said in his press statement on Friday.

The statement added that the COMSED football team will have friendly matches with Dekedda FC on February 16th, while they will face the defending champions Elman FC on 19th of February before they return to Galkayo which is about 750 kilometres north of the capital Mogadishu.

According to the statement some experienced football coaches lead by the SFF technical director Awil Ismail Mohamed have been appointed to hunt future national team members from COMSED team’s upcoming friendly matches to be hosted at Banadir stadium.
