The Somali Football Federation has recognized the Nairobi-based Somali language broadcaster Radio Barkulan as the frontrunner in peace building through football for peace programs in the war-devastated country.

In a press statement issued here on Tuesday the president of Somali Football Federation Said Mahmoud Nur said that the Nairobi-based broadcaster has played a key role in encouraging the football for peace programs in the country which intended to guide young people from falling into the hands of criminals.

The statement said that from March this year the station worked with SFF in awareness and football for peace programs which lead at least 4000 young boys mostly under 18 years of age to refrain from their former bad habits and instead became football addicts, according to statistics made by the Somali Football Federation Media Department.

“On behalf of the Somali Football family I am very grateful to Radio Barkulan for its great influence in encouraging public integration peace and sports promotion in the country—the station’s sports talk show program by Abdirashid Abdi Ahmed is very mentionable” the Somali Football Federation president’s statement noted.

The statement said that Radio Barkulan was the sole station that broadcasted live the recent peace soccer tournament for 4 districts in Mogadishu which are: Kaaraan, Adbel Aziz, Hodon and Wardhigley. The four are the worst-war ravaged districts in Somali capital and the competition was meant to encourage the return of people to their homes and the reopening of the high ways in those districts.

“We demand the station’s authorities to go forward with their efforts toward encouraging the football for peace programs in Somalia” the president said in his press release.

The statement added that Radio Barkulan was the sole station outside the host city of Garowe which sent a journalist to the country’s regional football tourney for peace and development in December last year.

The cooperation between Somali Football Federation and Radio Barkulan has developed and as a result the Somali football federation invited the station’s sports producer Abdirashid Abdi Ahmed to the recent CECAFA Kagame club cup in Tanzania.
