More than 130,000 tickets for the 2010 FIFA World Cup have been sold in less than two days as football fans rushed to the counters to buy them during this fifth and final phase of ticket sales.

The over-the-counter sales of 500,000 available tickets kicked off last Thursday at 11 ticketing centers and 600 First National Banks branches countrywide after FIFA realized that most South Africans do not have the internet or credit cards to use to purchase the tickets as it was in the first four phases of the sales.

"Some 75,000 of those were sold at FNB branches, some 25,000 at the ticketing centers and 30,000 via FIFA.com and Call Centers," FIFA said this week.

According to FIFA, things appeared to have moved smoother on Friday than they did on Thursday, the first day of the over the counter ticket sales. The system’s improved speed helped fast track Friday’s transactions, and subsequent days.

Due to high demand of over- the-counter sales at both Ticketing Centers and FNB branches when they went on sale across the country on Thursday - chaos erupted at some centers.

There were scenes of excitement, anger, frustration and outright chaos at many ticketing centers when problems emerged with the online system.

Due to the demand, FIFA has announced that tickets for the opening and closing matches have now been sold out.
